Reconstructive Surgeries for Different Eyelid Diseases

Last updated 1 year ago

When you think about eye lifts, you may think they are purely for cosmetic purposes. In actuality, some eye lifts and surgeries are reconstructive, designed to correct a problem that affects a person’s quality of life. Here are some common reconstructive surgeries that are useful in treating different eyelid diseases:

  • Myectomy

A myectomy surgery is a procedure that removes the muscles around the eyes that cause squinting. If you have the eyelid disease known as blepharospasm, you may suffer from uncontrolled blinking, squinting, and other movements of the muscles around the eyelid. To correct the problem, the muscles are removed so that disruptive squinting no longer occurs.

Another treatment option for blepharospasm is Botox injections. These injections stop the movements of the muscles to prevent bothersome blinking or squinting. Some cosmetic or reconstructive surgeons will use a combination of Botox injections and myectomy to provide relief.

  • Eye Lift

If you suffer from eyelids that droop, hinder your vision, or are in the wrong position, an eye lift can be the surgical option that is right for you. Your surgeon can lift the lids to clear your field of vision and allow you to easily read, drive, and work again. This procedure works for people who have too much fat or skin on their upper eyelids, causing them to hang down, and for people whose eyelids lack the inner structure necessary to hold them in their proper place.

  • MOHS

MOHS is a type of surgery for skin cancer that can be performed on the eyelids, brows, or other areas around the eye. Skin cancer is common on the face and eyelids and is often caused by prolonged exposure to the sun's damaging UV rays. A cosmetic surgeon can remove the skin cancer lesion, which will improve the patient’s prognosis and cosmetic appearance.

At the Center for Facial Appearances in Utah, we offer the reconstructive eyelid surgeries you need to have healthy, functional eyes. We also offer Botox treatments for blepharospasm. To schedule an appointment, call (801) 363-3355 today.
